BRUNSWICK, GA – The Georgia NAACP renews its steadfast demand for justice for Ahmaud Arbery and his family as pretrial proceedings against former Glynn County District Attorney Jackie Johnson are set to commence. This pivotal moment underscores the importance of holding those in power accountable for their role in obstructing justice.
Jackie Johnson faces charges of violating her oath of office and hindering a law enforcement investigation. Her alleged actions in the aftermath of Ahmaud Arbery's murder not only delayed justice but also contributed to the erosion of public trust in the judicial system.
Ahmaud Arbery was senselessly killed on February 23, 2020, while jogging in his neighborhood. The case became a flashpoint for the nation, highlighting systemic injustices and the urgent need for reform in how cases involving race and power dynamics are handled. Despite the convictions of his killers, the journey for comprehensive justice remains incomplete.
“The Georgia NAACP stands united with Ahmaud’s family and community in demanding accountability at every level of the justice system,” said Gerald Griggs, President of the Georgia NAACP. “Prosecutors and public officials are entrusted with the sacred duty to uphold the law impartially. When that trust is betrayed, it strikes at the very core of justice and equality. We will continue to support the demand for Full 100% Justice for Ahmaud Arbery.”
The Georgia NAACP reaffirms its commitment to advocating for systemic change and justice for all victims of racial violence and prosecutorial misconduct. We stand with our coalition partners in supporting the family in this journey for justice. As the pretrial proceedings move forward, we call on the legal system to ensure transparency and fairness, setting a precedent that no one is above the law.
We urge the public and allies in the fight for justice to remain vigilant and engaged. Together, we can honor Ahmaud Arbery’s legacy by continuing the work to dismantle systems of injustice and inequality.
