Georgia NAACP Condemns Harmful Education Cuts: A Direct Attack on Georgia’s Students and Future

Writer: GA STATE NAACPGA STATE NAACP

As the Georgia NAACP, we stand in strong opposition to the reckless and harmful cuts being made to the U.S. Department of Education. These cuts threaten the very foundation of educational opportunity in Georgia and across this nation, disproportionately harming our most vulnerable students—Black and Brown children, students with disabilities, and those from low-income families.

Federal funding accounts for a significant portion of Georgia’s education budget, supporting programs that provide critical resources to disadvantaged students, ensuring access to quality education, and protecting students’ civil rights. With nearly half of the Department’s workforce being slashed, we are looking at a future where Title I funding is at risk, special education programs face instability, and enforcement of civil rights protections is dangerously weakened.

Let me be clear—these cuts are not just numbers on a budget sheet; they will have real and devastating consequences for our children, our educators, and our communities. Stripping away federal oversight and resources disproportionately affects schools that serve marginalized communities, widening the already unacceptable gaps in educational equity.

The Georgia NAACP refuses to sit idly by while our children’s futures are dismantled. We will fight against these harmful policies, demand accountability from our elected officials, and work tirelessly to ensure that every child in Georgia has access to a fully funded and equitable education.

Furthermore, we urge local and state officials to push back against these cuts and take immediate action to increase education funding to make up for the impending shortfall. Georgia’s leaders must step up to protect our students, fill the funding gaps left by the federal government, and invest in the future of our children. The responsibility to safeguard public education now rests heavily on the shoulders of our state and local governments, and we will hold them accountable.

We call on our communities to take action, to raise their voices, and to stand with us in this fight. Our children deserve better, and we will not back down.

Gerald Griggs

President, Georgia NAACP
