GEORGIA NAACP CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH THROUGHOUT THE STATE WITH A STATEWIDE TOUR.

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, holds the distinction of being a federal holiday in the United States. This significant day is dedicated to honoring the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The term "Juneteenth" itself is derived from the combination of June and nineteenth, signifying the date of its commemoration. The celebration takes place on June 19th, which marks the anniversary of the historic proclamation by Major General Gordon Granger, declaring freedom for slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. It is worth noting that this proclamation occurred two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

For Juneteenth 2023, Georgia NAACP President Gerald Griggs traveled the State of Georgia to celebrate with numerous branches of the Georgia State Conference. He began with the Cobb NAACP for their 20th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Marietta Square. He travelled to Americus, Sandy Springs, Atlanta, Rome and several others stops to celebrate with the State of Georgia. Happy Juneteenth Georgia from the Executive Committee and the President Gerald Griggs.
